What Is There To Do In Prague?
Prague… there are so many things to say about this city full of history, architectural exploits, memories and traditions. It is necessary to concentrate for a moment on the famous Karlova Street and Carlos Bridge.
If there is one thing Prague cannot do without, it is without a doubt Karlova Street, for its diversity and architectural originality. It also has great cultural importance; the incoming sovereigns used it before each coronation in the Saint Guy Cathedral, in the heart of the fortress.
On the corner of Seminarska Street, you will end up at a house with a golden well, positioned in the nook of a charming plaza. You will listen to the sad storey of the young girl who was attracted by strange golden reflections and then fell in the well and drowned… we would say that she has taken shelter in the company of two other ghosts of Spanish origin.
A small detour by the Marianské Namesti Plaza provides the opportunity to visit the new town hall with influences of modern art. The facades and the balconies are adorned with sculptural decorations; one is of the celebrated Rabbi Low, astronomer and hero of the city.
After passing the golden serpent house at number 18, where the first coffee shop of the city opened, you might look up to find a tightrope walker….
Finally, at the crossing of Karlova, nám?stí Malé and Husova, stop to admire the spectacular baroque palace, Clam-Gallas, which reveals the archives of the city.
Just before the bridge, and after passing by a street adjacent to a hanging stranger, we discover an enormous building: the Clementinum, headquarters of the national library.
The Stone Bridge dates from the 14th century and was erected by King Carlos IV. This imposing monument rests on 16 stoneware pillars protected by trees in case of cold temperatures, and measures 515 meters high by 10 meters long. In 1870 it was named the Carlos Bridge and was consolidated to better resist the ferocious Vtlava River.
Let yourself be enchanted by the charisma of the stone and bronze baroque style statues blackened by time, positioned at an equal distance from each other, and accompanied by the groups of tourists from all over Europe, easily recognizable by the colour of the guide’s umbrella predicting rain or not…
Surrounded by 2 magnificent complementary towers, the gothic style tower on the small side and the Roman style tower from the old city; this is an architectural treasure of incomparable beauty. It’s the cherry on the pie; your walk will be made brighter by improvised concerts from accordionists and violinists in a very spirited gypsy atmosphere.
