Visiting The Hebrides And Hotels In The Hebrides

Posted in Travel

The Outer Hebrides are a group of isolated islands situated off the West coast of Scotland. In years gone by the Hebrides were part of the Norwegian empire and during another period they were part of the Manx empire, they only became part of Scotland a few hundred years ago. Since then, during a period of time referred to as the ‘clearances’, many of people, including complete families and even complete villages were aggressively expelled from their lands and transported to countries far away where the indigenous people talked in greatly different languages. Many people found themselves in countries such as Canada and America and even in countries as far away as Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania.

As a result of this an incredible number of, thriving, Scottish or Gaelic communities have appeared around the world. Furthermore, again as a result of this, there are a massive number of folk that can proudly trace their genealogy right back to the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles. This has created an amazing increase in the number of folk visiting the Outer Hebrides. Of course the Outer Hebrides are very reasons than this.

The Outer Hebrides are extremely famous for the large number of highly inviting, spotless beaches, (especially those which appear on the Uists, South Harris and Lewis) as well as the astounding scenery which is inhabited by extremely diverse fauna and flora ( with many of the species protected by law). You will, most likely, find yourself extremely surprised by the incredible number of SSSI’s (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) in the Outer Hebrides.

Because of the region’s great many archaeological sites, which are, usually, in a surprisingly good condition, the Outer Hebrides are also of great interest to archaeologists. These sites are fascinating with the Standing Stones at Calanais (in Lewis) being far older than the Stone Henge standing stones (found in Wiltshire, in the South of England) and the broch at Carloway (also on Lewis) being one of the best in Europe.

If you are in the process of thinking about a holiday in the Outer Hebrides you will need to book early for the simple reason that unfortunately Lewis Hotels are often reserved well in advance. This is also the truth with Self Catering on Harris, which you might think of as a more suitable alternative. Self Catering Cottages on Harris can be incredibly interesting, mostly all Self Catering Cottages on Harris have the most spectacular views that you are likely to behold but there is also a most interesting selection of cottages available to hire. If looking online look out for the blackhouse at Scarista, Harris.
