Unusual Scottish Vacations
The country of Scotland has some of the most glorious scenery to be found in the U.K. making it a popular holiday destination. Countless numbers of visitors to Scotland choose the City of Edinburgh as their primary destination, whereas some choose something a bit different. The following examines Scottish vacations and a selection of things to do when in Scotland. I also looks at the Wickerman Festival.
With such an incredibly diverse countryside the list of things to do is endless. Mountain climbing is highly popular, as are hill walking vacations. The most popular holidays are fishing or golf. With Scotland being the home of golf it should not surprise you that that you are hardly ever too far from a minimum of one first class golf course. With the River Spey and the River Tay you can almost be certain of an incredible days fishing. But what if you fancy a vacation with a difference?
Increasing numbers of people are making music festivals their yearly holiday. Although the vast majority of music festivals are huge with a focus upon making money, you can find a small selection of family music festivals, such as the Wickerman Festival and Tartan Heart.
More of a music and arts festival, the yearly Wickerman festival is held on farm land near the village of Dundrennan, Dumfries & Galloway about 5 miles away from the Scottish town of Kirkcudbright. The event theme is the cult classic movie, “The Wicker Man” which features Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento and Ingrid Pitt.
The first Wickerman Festival was held in the month of July 2002 and was put together by local guy, Sid Ambrose. With little experience of putting together a music festival it is a surprise that it still exists today, especially when you take in the current economic climate. The Wickerman Festival has slightly changed each year and has an almost cult following itself.
The festival is incredibly family friendly it has a great many activities for children including, a mountain biking trail, a fairground, various workshops and face painting. This can be easily proven by searching Yahoo, MSN or Google for photos of Wickerman 2009 or simply pop along to the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.
Close to the site of the festival is the small village of Kirkudbright where you will discover many locations used in the film including Harbour Cottage which was used for the bakery and High Street Gallery which was used for the post office and sweetshop of May Morrison. You will find that there are a great many places worth visiting in the area and it is well worth having a short vacation here so that you may visit all of the tourist attractions. Popular destinations in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Bed and breakfast accommodation in Scotland is nearly always superb quality and is also fairly priced and less costly than staying in a Scottish hotel.
