Touring Antietam - the site of the bloodiest battle in American history
In popular culture, war is often portrayed as glorious and exciting. Monuments such as the Antietam National Battlefield serve as stark reminders of the enormous human costs of warfare, no matter how noble the cause at hand.
This is the site of the bloodiest battle in American history. More Americans lost their lives here in a single day than they did in any other battle in any other war. The grounds are decorated with monuments to the fallen, both common soldiers and the six generals who were mortally wounded or killed outright during the early September battle in 1862. One hundred and fifty years later, their names, the monuments erected to their memory and being able to walk along the same paths they took remind us that they were just as human as is anyone alive today and that the enormity of their sacrifice is not blunted by the passage of time.
There are many opportunities to see this historic battlefield: walking tours, driving tours of varying lengths, guided tours and tours in the company of a knowledgeable park ranger.
