Things to Do When You Are Buying an Electric Guitar Amp
It will be hard to discern if your guitar is as great as you think it is. How much you really invest in it will be the main factor to consider. Usually, not many people real know how to get the best value for their cash when they are out buying a guitar and its accessories. For me, the wisest thing to invest in would be a guitar amp compared to other unimportant things.
An amp can mean the difference between great sound and lame sound. This is why investing in a dependable amp is the most important thing. You should of course learn about the different types of amps before buying one.
You generally have four kinds of amps. These all have varying effects on the sound that your guitar can make. First we have analogue amplifiers. This kind uses transistors for their pre and power amps. These usually make your guitar sound brittle and strong. You get distortions that have the same distinguishable texture of tone but the quality is what you should worry about, which varies widely. You don’t have to replace its parts so often because it’s a very sturdy kind of amp. And it also helps that these are relatively inexpensive when you compare it with the other kinds of amps.
Now we have tube amps. Tube amps came before all the other variations of amps, which is also why these amps are based on its design. There are quite a few guitarists that depend on this kind of amp a lot, being the first type of amp made. Tube amps have a heavier tone in comparison with analogue amps. It gives the amplified sound a more natural feel. Another advantage of this amp is that it gives you the same amount of power for the same amount of watts. If you want clean sounds on a separate channel from your distortions, you can have that with these kinds of amps. You still have to take care of it though, since its tubes are made from glass. Every once in a while you are going to have to replace its tubes.
Of course, given our technology today, if we have analogue amps, we also have digital amps. Digital or modeling amps are capable of mimicking the type of sounds other amps make using a pre-programmed software. It can get a bit expensive though. Though generic digital amps are usually affordable compared to those that are branded, it is still pretty expensive. But this kind of amp will allow you to experiment with different sound effects and qualities, giving you more choices, so investing in this isn’t such a bad idea. The higher priced a digital amp is, the better its quality. You won’t even be able to tell the difference between a digitally rendered sound and the real thing.
Now we get to a combination of sorts, the hybrid amp. The beauty of the hybrid amp is in its technology that combines the handiness of an analogue with the power of a tube amp. A popular example of this is the Marshall Valvestate. You will get a wholer sound for a lesser price.
After learning about all the various amps, you should now be able to tell which amp suits you best. When it is time for you to finally buy your own amp, remember not to jump too quickly. You should bring your guitar so you will be able to test all the combinations possible for a guitar and an amp. Does it sound weird at low volumes? Can it keep up on full blast? Are there any weird sounds other than that which should be coming from your guitar? Remember that you are going to use this for the long term, so pick carefully.
