The Focus is on the Playstation Eye

Posted in Computer Games

Recently, at the yearly Electronic Entertainment Expo conference, Sony plugged what they call the Sony Playstation Eye. Sensing deja vu? You may be thinking of Sony’s EyeToy, a add-on for the Playstation 2 that utilized the realisation of the real time actions of the gamer. The Eye builds upon this feature in some fantastic ways, but they are not wholly original ones. Having said that, it really is difficult to know just how much this product will truly influence the world of gaming, if it does.

For those that didn’t see E3, perhaps the most important features of  Sony Playstation Eye is the motion sensing. How this sensing is captured is through the tracking of the sensitive orb at the tips of the remote created for the Eye. Sony’s producers then went on to offer a live demonstration of the Playstation Eye’s skills, utilizing the remote to function with a 3D interface within the TV screen and demonstrating exactly how the equipmentcould be added to categories like first-person shooters, real-time strategy, and also action. Every movement a gamer makes with the remote control is projected onscreen with 1 to 1 accuracy.

But see, does not that ring any bells? At the previous Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo performed the very same presentation with their Wii Motion Plus peripheral. It also recognises and copies actions at 1 to 1 precision. The only major disparity between the two peripherals is that the Sony Playstation Eye requires an updated version of the EyeToy camera to follow the remotes, but Nintendo’s Wii Motion Plus connects to an out-of-the-way sensor bar without cables. If anything, Sony’s latest move appears less ahead next to Nintendo’s technology of a year ago.

Though trailing in the footsteps of existing ideas, the Eye remains an excellent offering of hardware that is certain to excite most every fan of the PlayStation 3. Although it will not drastically change the realm of game playing entirely, the Sony Playstation Eye provides a good advance for Sony’s credibility, and will perhaps assist them recover regarding improvement.
