Some Things You Should Know When Taking City Breaks In Cambridge

The city of Cambridge is widely known all over the earth as being the home of the University of Cambridge, one of the most prestigious learning centres in Britain. The University consists of thirty one colleges including; St Catharine’s College, St Edmund’s College, St John’s College and Selwyn College which have a major impact upon the city. Although a great many visitors arrive at Cambridge with their main aim being to view the University, Cambridge has a good number of other attractions besides the colleges. The city is an ancient town dating back to medieval times and subsequently there there are countless of superb architecture. One can walk around the medieval streets, relax one of the many gardens or parks or you might go punting down the River Cam. If the idea of going punting thrills you, then you can rent a punt or for something different you could take a chauffeured punt. There are various companies offering this service along the River Cam. As a further alternative a trip up the River Cam in a narrow boat.

Cambridge is also well known for its churches, with 13 of them being located within the city confines. Of all the 13 churches situated in the centre of Cambridge it is All Saints Church which is thought by many to be one of the most fine examples of English Gothic revival architecture. A further important church is Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of only four Norman round churches located in the country. The smallest church in Cambridge is the Church of St Peter’s, which is hidden away in a quiet part of the town. Possibly the best panoramic views of the city and colleges of the University are to be experienced from the site of the Great St Mary’s Church, the University church.

Because there is such a vast selection of tourist attractions available in Cambridge, it would be near impossible to see them all in just one day. Therefore we advise that you spend a minimum of 2 days in Cambridge. If you and your family are in the process of deciding upon spending some time in the city of Cambridge it is crucial that you book your lodgings as early as possible because, unfortunately hotels in Cambridge tend to be alarmingly busy and are often fully booked months in advance. If you have a large family you might find that serviced apartments in Cambridge are a more affordable alternative.
