Playstation Home Goes Live
Sony’s new social networking community, Playstation Home, has now gone live in it’s beta stages.
PlayStation Home is a new social networking site that allows Playstation 3 users to create an avatar and furnish their own apartments, they can also play social games and soon have the ability to share music and video online.
This release of their new virtual community comes after Sony announced that they are planning on cutting several thousand jobs. However, their new social networking venture could help them bring in some extra cash. They have started to come up with ideas of way to make even more money from this by offering new cloths and apartments to buy, plus starting advertising on the various billboards and screens throughout the community.
One major reason why the Playstation Home was released now is because Sony is trying to sway the minds of potential customers during the Christmas period. Sony is attempting to compete with Microsoft’s latest Xbox Live revamp where Xbox 360 owners could create their own avatars and play new social games like 1VS100.
However, will the new social networking clubhouse be enough to sway the minds of buyers? I do not think so. Simply because of this new feature, I don’t think it would sway the minds of buyers considering the Xbox 360 already has all of this, plus the price tag of the Playstation is alot higher than the Xbox.
By searching around, you can get an Xbox 360, with 4 games and 2 controllers for around £130, but with the PlayStation, you can get the PS3 and only 3 games for a whopping £270.
Even though the whole idea of PlayStation Home is good, and it’s a great idea for current PS3 owners who want to interact with the games that they already own, I don’t think it will encourage more buyers, unless they reduce the price of the console. So, a good try by Sony, but I don’t think it will have much effect on their sales figures.
