Piazza Navona in Rome
Every day of the year, in Piazza Navona there are a lot of people. But there are not only tourists but also many Romans, who come here to sit on the benches to have an ice cream in a bar on the square or just to watch the crowds of visitors walking among the fountains and the palaces in this masterpiece of the Roman Baroque. Piazza Navona is one of the Romans’ most loved squares, for centuries it has been the place of entertainment for aristocrats and the poor. On summer evenings, when the colours of the sunset make Rome’s roofs turn red, Piazza Navona is one of the most beautiful places to be, so, why not rent an apartment to get the most out of the area? The rectangular sky above the square becomes brown slowly, while in the homes yellow lights appear. Coming out from any of the streets , one is enraptured by such beauty. It always happens, so that people who were there at least once, always dream about going back to Piazza Navona. It was always the place for the ‘Roman Games’ and one of the most fun-filled; these ‘Games’ took place in this square which formed was the “lake” that was held during the warmer months. The only point of discharge water from the Fountain of the Rivers was closed, causing the square to flood and the Romans used it as a place of refreshment until when, for obvious hygiene reasons, this practice was abandoned. Piazza Navona is currently full of excellent ice cream parlours and cafés: we suggest you stop for a pleasant moment of relaxation at the “Tre scalini” where you can taste the famous chocolate truffles accompanied by pleasant background music ranging from jazz to classical Roman or startling “Café of the peace” in the way of Peace. This was, for years, one of the most popular meeting points in Rome. Just behind this café you will see the masterpiece of the Chiostro del Bramante, home of several exhibitions. In via del Teatro Pace is the “Boom”, where you can order sushi and sashimi served at the counter until midnight. For lunch go to the well-known “Convivio dei Fratelli Troiani” in via dei Soldati where you can enjoy breaded medallions of lamb with almond sformatino rice and broccoli. The square is a intellectuals’ and artists’ haunt, while at night it is the favourite destination of young people and is the home of the entertainment. Do not miss Piazza Navona at Christmas, when it is filled with stalls selling sweets and socks. An exceptional beauty.
