Nottinghamshire Vacations And The City Of Nottingham Plus Some Useful Information

Posted in Travel

Consider Nottingham and the majority of folk consider the legend of Robin Hood, his band of merry men and Sherwood Forest and even though the legend attracts many tourists year after year there is much more to the area than meets the eye. Indeed Nottingham has a reasonable selection of interesting local attractions making it a superb base for a family vacation and the following article takes a close look at the city and a small number of tourist attractions in, and close to, Nottingham, and also some establishments offering bed and breakfast in Nottingham.

Nottingham is located in the county of Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands, England, UK. As well as the legend of Robin Hood, his band of merry men and Sherwood Forest, the city is also widely known for the lace making industry especially during the period known as the Industrial Revolution when it gained an excellent worldwide reputation.

The Lace Market

At one time the heart of the world’s lace industry, at the peak of the British Empire, the Lace Market is, today, a protected heritage area. It features numerous incredible examples of industrial architecture of the Nineteenth Century. The market wasn’t like a normal market area, as such, rather than featuring stalls and salespersons, it was a number of salesrooms and warehouses displaying and selling lace. Following the collapse in the lace industry the market also fell into decline but, these days, the vast majority of the fine warehouses have been restored and renovated for residential use and other purposes such as photographic studios and similar. The Nottingham Lace Market is a popular visitor attraction.

Galleries of Justice

Nearby the Lace Market you will find the Galleries of Justice in Shire Hall. The Hall is a Georgian building which features Neoclassical pilasters, columns and dome. The front of the hall has, if you look at it carefully, a spelling mistake Goal rather than Gaol. The Hall has two excellently preserved Victorian courtrooms and old cells, a women’s prison, bath house, a prisoner’s exercise yard and an Edwardian police station.

Nottingham is a great place to have a short vacation. There is lots to see and do around the city and a massive number of visitor attractions within easy reach. Places well worth visiting include; Hardwick Hall, Wollaton Hall and Newstead Abbey.

As in all England bed and breakfast, accommodation in Nottingham is commonly of superb quality at a fair price and many tourists choose to stay in Nottingham for part of their break and then elsewhere for the remainder.
