Movie Trailers and How to Watch Them
Movie trailers are the art of their own. Often we watch them to get the idea on what to expect from the movie. Other times we watch movie trailers for entertainment purposes. Regardless of what is the reason we’re watching it, they’re fun. They portray the true art of advertisement and entertainment in once short video fragment.
Movie trailers are commercials. They are not in pure form, but that is the purpose they serve. Buying movie tickets is one of the purposes to create them. Regular television commercials aremuch different from movie trailers. That fact they have so many things in common really separates them appart.
Creating a movie trailer is a hard process. TV commercials have just enough footage to do an edit. Movie trailers, on the other hand, are much different and harder to do. The choice editor faces each time he creates a movie trailer is always hard. Having tens of hours of footage requires a great knowledge. Editor must use this wealth of information to create an ad that would tell the story and advertise it in short one to two minute piece.
We must say to ourselves that we love trailers. On the other hand, we have a right to have a different view on them. There are some people that do, in fact, not watch them. The reason for that being is simple. They don’t want a movie trailer to spoil anything about the movie. Usually this happens when a person really waits for a movie and desired to be surprised. The fear to spoil the movie, I was in this boat while waiting for the upcomming Avatar. Other people are just too obsessed with trailers. They would watch every single video they can get their hands on. Don’t they just love movie trailers. I’m sure they do. Nobody knows? You and me may be another category. I call them regular watchers. They watch trailers while in the Movie Theater. They also watch trailers, when they want to find out something about an upcoming movie.
Now someone has to create a trailer that will fullfill all those categories and make all of those people happy. It is a tough job and it is an art. Next time you watch movie trailer think about all the hard work that was done to create it. Many hours of work are spent to come up with a great script. Days of work are spent to select the right material. Those people are artists. Remember that. I think there should be an Oscar for movie trailers.
This form of art is such a great part of movie making. Those short excerpts can mislead you. Movie trailers can tell you to expect something from the movie. Sometime, they contain material that will not even be in the movie. Some movies do that, as it is a commercial after all. Never judge the movie by the trailer alone. Trailer will try to mislead you into something the movie is not. The movie trailer can be thought as a first episode for the movie. This is one of the ways to have your expectations on the safe side.
