Make Money Now, Even If You’re a Beginning Writer

Beginning writers often fail to sell their writing. Why is it that relatively few creative writers get published? Perhaps it is because they don’t have the confidence needed to get published? Or could it be because they aren’t sure how to get published?

Every writer jumps with joy when they see their first byline. This is an exciting time for every writer. Seeing your work in print is something that will never grow old. Say it’s a pride thing. Call it an ego trip. You might think it is a matter of being self-centered. Call it what you want. Published writers are driven to share their talents.

So, what is the trick to getting published? It really isn’t that hard. The hard part is in your self-discipline to follow through.

  1. Go to your local newspaper and ask for a reporting job. Local papers usually have difficulty in finding a reporter for sports events and social functions.
  2. But in reality, it makes little difference, even if you don’t get the job. There is another way to scheme your way into the newspaper. Keep an eye out for accidents. Take pictures and interview people while you’re waiting for the mess to clear. (The paper will give you $5 extra for each picture they use.) Ask an officer who is in charge of the investigation. Approach the officer with confidence and say, “I’d like to talk to you. I’m a stringer for ________ (name of newspaper)”.  Ask if you can see him after the accident is cleared away. That’s when he will give you names, addresses, ages of victims, etc. This is time sensitive reporting, so get it to the newspaper quickly.
  3. Interview someone who has a unique talent, or a strange hobby. Turn the article into your local newspaper, and don’t forget the pictures.
  4. By sending articles with regional interest to various newspapers all over the US, you will keep the money rolling. The internet or the library will supply you with a huge list of newspapers. By regularly submitting the same article, you can make hundreds of dollars!

This is a super way to get your first clippings, and it doesn’t really take much talent. Newspapers pay on acceptance, too, so it is quick money. Don’t let another day go by – get started today!
