Guitar Hero or Rock Band, Which One to Buy?

Posted in Computer Games

This has always been a difficult decision ever since the likes of Rock Band came onto the scene, which music game is right for you? Now this decision is getting even harder because both Activision and Harmonix are releasing even more games, so here’s a post to help you decide which one to buy for your next gen console.

Starting with Guitar Hero 2, this is the first Guitar Hero game to be released onto the next gen consoles, only on the Xbox 360 though. Although this game is brilliant, it only has a guitar career so I wouldn’t suggest it for a beginneer. I do think this game is a good buy if you are a fan of classic songs like Free Bird.

Guitar Hero 3 is the next game up, this one can be played on the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Guitar Hero 3 is just like Guitar Hero 2 really, it’s very good, however, only the guitar is available. However, this game comes with the best set list out of all of the games, although less songs, but they are all great so it’s a must have for any player.

The next couple up are Guitar Hero Aerosmith and Guitar Hero Metallica. Because of what I just said, they are not great for beginners, although Metallica does have the multiple instruments, you don’t get a wide array of songs. Unless you are a real fan of the band, or a Guitar Hero fan, I wouldn’t recommend buying them.

Guitar Hero World Tour is a very popular one at the moment because it contains all 4 instruments, guitar, bass, drums and mic. However, in my opinion, the set list is terrible. It’s full of old songs which is good for a family buy not solo play.

Guitar Hero Greatest Hits is the next game, but it’s also the latest released. In my opinion this game has to be the best for a beginner music game player or for a family game. I think this because the game’s set list is built from the best songs in Guitar Hero 1,2,3, 80′s and Aerosmith. This means that you get the greatest songs to make an awesome set list, aswell as being able to play all these songs with the full range of instruments.

Now onto Guitar Hero’s competitor, Rock Band. The first game, Rock Band 1, was extremely good because it had a great set list as well as the addition of the full range of instruments. The game was very good beside the guitar controllers that they made, they were pretty terrbile. However, with the release of Rock Band 2 I wouldn’t buy Rock Band 1 as the first game because Rock Band 2 comes with an equally great set list but it comes with added bonuses that the first game doesn’t. Also, once you have Rock Band 2, you can then buy Rock Band 1 and add the songs onto Rock Band 2.

The only downside to Rock Band 2 is that you currently can’t buy the Rock Band 2 instruments in Europe that come with improved drums. However, these new instruments are being released with The Beatles: Rock Band later this year.

That’s not all, though, Rock Band also has a huge online library of songs that you can download for a small amount. They have hundreds and hundreds of songs that you can download to expand your song list, plus they are all compatible with all the Rock Band games meaning you can play them on any of the games.

But, for beginners, is Rock Band a good game? I would say no, however, it has to be the best game for any experienced player because it has a hugely expandable set list with new songs being released for download almost every week.

As for the best game for beginners, aslong as you get all the instruments to get the most out of the game, I would say Guitar Hero Greatest Hits is the best.
