The International Fireworks Competition takes place every year in Blanes, which hundreds of visitors and people from the region attend. Blanes has the greatest number of inhabitants on the Costa Brava, and with many things to do, see and enjoy.
Blanes festivals take place at the end of July, one of these being the Fireworks Competition which attracts a large quantity of people from the region, as well as many tourists who come to enjoy these fantastic festivals.
This competition, which is more than a hundred years old, has become a tradition which is tightly controlled by security so that there are no injuries and so that the festival can be fully enjoyed by everyone.
The 38th International Fireworks Competition on the Costa Brava, Trophy Villa de Blanes 2008, will be held on Tue 22nd to Sun 27th July 2008 in this Catalan town which is highly skilled in firework displays. The Blanes town council department for Festivals has published the firework programme for 2008, which can be viewed at Agenda Piroart.
There will be six firework companies competing at Blanes (Girona, Catalonia). One of these is a foreign company (Ip Innovative, from Germany), and the other five are Spanish (Tomás-from Castille, Europla-from Valencia, Zaragozana-from Aragón, Pablo-from Asturias and Valenciana-from Valencia.
The latest news about the competition is that this year there will not be seven places as in previous years but six. As a result, each company will have a greater budget this year. Last year saw a restructuring of the prizes, it was decided that there will be only two positions whereas before there were three, and that the amount of money awarded would be greater, something that is going to continue this year. The winner will receive € 9,000 plus the trophy, and second position will receive € 6,000.

Fireworks are strictly for visual effect, the competition is not for loud fireworks but for the brilliant explosion of colour in the sky and they will begin everyday at 22:30.
