Full Game Downloads Coming To Xbox 360?
During an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Peter Molyneux, maker of Fable, hinted that Xbox owners could soon see full game downloads coming to Xbox Live.
During the interview, Peter said “I think it would be a great thing for this studio to work on. I can’t say anything else of it – I would be killed to death”.
At the moment, you can download some games from Xbox Live and the Playstation Network, however, the games available are limited to older titles and ones that take up less hard drive space.
Although some people may think that this idea is brilliant as they wouldn’t have to leave their house, the reality of it would bring them out of the clouds.
At the moment, if you were to download a full Xbox game onto your hard drive, it would steal around 6GB of space and take a very long time to download.
Even though these problems could be worked around, considering the Xbox 360 Elite has a 120GB hard drive, and the ability to download the games overnight, there are still many problems that would beed to be considered.
Firstly, as there would be no second hand games, the second hand market would disppear, and that would lead the prices of new games to not go down in price.
Also, because the games would drain around 6GB each, the hard drives would last no time at all, gamers would be required to pay the rather large sum of £100 to get the 120GB hard drive, which would still only take around 20 games.
This will all lead to people deleting their games, many people won’t want to buy a new hard drive when it comes to getting a new game, and because of that, they will become more choosy when it comes to buying a game.
Plus, the idea would not work for arcade systems which have no hard drive, you would have to buy one seperatly, or Microsoft would have to start including one, which would push prices up.
Even though there are several downsides to full game downloads, there is one upside. Because the game would be online, the prices of them may go down as there would be no costs for packaging.
Overall, I find the idea rather pointless. The only real advantage is that don’t have to leave your home, which, if you order online then you don’t have to leave your house anyway, and the post would probably be faster than the download.
