The « foire du trône » of Paris: the biggest fair of France from 3rd of April to 1st of June 2009

The « foire du trône », which takes place close to your location appartement paris is one of the largest and the oldest fairs in France. It began in 957. It was originally called “gingerbread fair”. This name was given to the fair in 1131 after the son of Louis le Gros was charged at by a herd of pigs which were on the loose at the time in Paris. After this had happened, only the pigs that belonged to the disciples of St. Antoine were allowed to roam the streets of Paris, the others were prohibited. To thank the King for this preferential treatment, the monks – bakers made pig-shaped gingerbread at the “gingerbread fair” which was also called “Fair of St. Antoine” because it took place at the Abbey of St. Antoine. This fair was the predecessor of today’s “foire du trône”. At the time it was a large and popular open market where farmers and merchants traded. Stands of food, jugglers, acrobats, clowns, and actors participated in this yearly event.
