Festivals in Seville: April Fair

Posted in Travel

After Easter, in the heat of spring and usually in the month of April, separated in time by two weeks, Sevillians prepare themselves for the April Fair. Planning begins six months before.

It has its origin in 1846, as a Fair conceived for the acquisition and sale of cattle, in which two retailers of Basque and Catalan origin, Bonaplata Narcissus and Jose Maria de Ybarra confirmed a proposal asking permission to celebrate this yearly fair. These days there are only some vestiges of its origins remaining, like the bullfights and the strolls by pony.

With time it has evolved into one of the two events most representative of the city, along with the Easter celebrations.

At first it was in the Prado of San Sebastian but at the end of the 60s it moved to another district where it occupies an area of more than a million square meters and with more one thousand houses. Most of them are private, while others belong to businesses and stores.
