Doctor Who’s Eleventh Hour Is Here
So ultimately the eleventh Doctor Who is here, debuting properly together with his first complete Doctor Who episode, ‘The Eleventh Hour’ over the Easter holiday within the UK. The hour-long first episode of Doctor Who series 5 was written by new series runner Steven Moffat, and if it’s a nice instance of things to follow with this collection, then fans of the longest running sf program in history are in for an awesome ride. Matt Smith is instantly likeable as the eleventh Doctor who, who, despite his youth, carries with him a great deal of that all-necessary gravitas and genius that the Doctor always needs.
He is immediately all over the character, and commands each scene he is in. Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan, is going to take somewhat more getting familiar with, and I’m already tired of everybody going on about how attractive she is. With a bit of luck the focus will move to her acting and the tales once she’s not rushing round in a kinky policewoman’s uniform. This first story within the eleventh Doctor Who series is a pretty regular earthbound SF story, but it’s in how things are brought to a head that the beauty of Moffat’s script lies.
The way through which the eleventh Doctor Who overcomes the most recent threat, and rescues the planet in just 20 minutes, is superb. The episode is superbly put together, and while the effects are somewhat unwieldly now and again, it’s probably the most effective ‘New Doctor’ episode we’ve enjoyed since the program came back in 2005.
The editing and direction are great, but the music lets the episode down in a couple of parts, most notably the latest version of the famous theme tune. I did enjoy the new title arrangement nevertheless. The latest TARDIS is superb, the eleventh Doctor Who shows potential and Amy exhibits promise. Altogether, it is an excellent start to what will hopefully be a momentous series of this rightful institution of genre tv.
