In the east… whith “New Music” and “New Dance”. Where artists with their studios, theatre- makers, musicians and sound producers, photographers, graphic artists, designers, architects and other artistic and cultured cats have worked hard for your enjoyment.
The East Side Gallery is a special place where art is a unique expression of the history of a divided Germany. It is a place where the people talk about the old and the actual Berlin, a divided and a united Germany. The wall of the former GDR, which could be obtained for over 20 years, has a length of 1,316 meters. The East Side Gallery is the largest open-air gallery in the world since 1991 and this monument is located in the “Mühlenstraße”, between Berlin “Ostbahnhof” and the “Oberbaum”- bridge. After the opening of the borders it was a pleasure for 118 artists from 21 countries in the world, to spray their graffiti works on this historical wall. The artists commented on 106 paintings on the former east side of the wall with a variety of artistic means the political changes of the years 1989/90. The east side of the border after the border was still totally white and was therefore an ideal working area for the graffiti artists. The most taken photos from the works of the East Side Gallery are “Brother Kiss” by Dimitri Vrubel, “Berlin-New York” by Gerhard Lahr and “Fatherland” by Gunther Schaefer. The works had already been restored in 2000, as they have always been attacked by fanciless sprayers of tags and souvenir hunters.
Over the years, many images of the East Side Gallery have been destroyed by the weather. In 1997 the association “Artist’s initiative East Side Gallery e.V.” has been founded, which, under the chairmanship of Kani Alavi, now bother to preserve and restore the wall. An important stage of their efforts was the restoration in 2000, when with the help of the coatings industry the restoration of 40 images could be restored. The concrete surfaces were smoothed and the remaining works of art were covered by a special coating, which can slightly remove the unwanted graffiti.
A visit to witness this unique time of the Berlin history it is worth double and triple. Especially when summer begins. But in Berlin there is much to experience and discover. Berlin never sleeps!!!
