Bermuda

Posted in Beach Vacations

Bermuda is an island located in the North Atlantic Ocean roughly 580 nautical miles (1074 kilometers) east-southeast of Cape Hatteras on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and roughly 590 nautical miles (1093 kilometers) southeast of Martha’s Vineyard. It is not, as commonly believed, part of the Caribbean Sea nor is it within the tropics. The subtropical, or temperate, climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream.

Only 21 miles long and two miles wide, Bermuda is a loosely- linked chain of islands with rolling hills, beautifully-tended gardens, pastel homes with sloping terraced white roofs, (shaped to collect rain, the island’s free source of fresh water), ocean views everywhere you look, and a prosperous, friendly population that warmly welcomes visitors.

Bermuda is the oldest self-governing British Dependent Territory with the Westminster parliamentary system of government. The Premier appoints a Cabinet of 12 members. The Legislature consists of a Senate whose 11 members are appointed by the Governor and a House of Assembly with 40 elected members. Bermuda would remain unclaimed until 1609 when Admiral Sir George Somers of England became shipwrecked on his quest for Jamestown, Virginia and claimed the islands in the name of England. He along with his shipwrecked crew explored the greater parts of the island which consists of 180 coral islands and islets, each with coral pink sandy beaches. This exploration led to the eventual colonization of Bermuda in 1612 and the Island was then named, Somers Island after Admiral George Somers.

Tourist travel to Bermuda to escape North American winters first developed in Victorian times. Tourism continues to be important to the island’s economy, although international business has surpassed it in recent years. Bermuda has developed into a highly successful offshore financial center. Tourists are not allowed to drive automobiles in Bermuda, but readily available motor scooters and bicycles allow independent explorations of this small island. The shops are decidedly upscale with particular emphasis on fine products from around the world and especially Britain. Bermuda also has an abundance of restaurants featuring the island’s distinctively spicy cuisine.
