Berlin, The Technological City

Posted in Travel

Berlin isn’t only the capital of Germany, but it has also developed into one of most strategic points for the mass-media in the country. 130,000 people are working in this sector alone. In no other German city does there exist a national or international TV and radio programming as extensive as that in Berlin.

Both national and international films are shot in Berlin, so it’s not surprising that even Hollywood actors such as Matt Damon go to Berlin to film, like for example in 2004, with the shooting of the second part of “The Bourne Trilogy”. Apart from this suitability as a place for shooting films, films are regularly shown and attract a huge number of stars, not just to present them but also to sign autographs patiently.

Important awards are also given in the city, such as the Echo, the Goldene Kamera or the National and International Cinema awards. However, the event which stands out the most every year is la Berlinale, recognised worldwide as one of the most significant events in the cine-world. An international jury decides who gets awarded the gold and silvers bears.

Berlin has also been developed as an important place for the music world, because you can find, amongst others, big international business such as BMG, MTV and Sony. The city has also been the birthplace for many successful bands and musicians such as Wir sind Helden, Seeed or Culcha Candela.

For the news presenters, Berlin is also a good starting point and because of this, the main studios for the television channels ARD and ZDF are located in Berlin-Mitte. The international press also come here to report on the latest news.

Television series that are shot in Berlin are the most famous of all; some that stand out with good reason are: “Gute Zeiten schlechte Zeiten”, that has been filmed in the city since 1992.

There are also many newspapers in Berlin. One of the most well-known and significant ones is “Die Welt”, whose main publishing house is in the city. This newspaper is distributed in over 130 countries and includes a supplement for Berlin and Hamburg.

It’s a good idea to visit Berlin to get an idea for yourself of the favourite city amongst the mass-media. Some businesses even offer free tours, which you can have a quick look from behind the scenes.

We strongly advise the booking of accommodation because Berlin is a favoured destination by many mass-media lovers. Many hotels and apartments are in central points of the city and make up a good starting point for visiting the city.
