Are We Too Lazy To Do Anything But Watch TV?

Posted in Performing Arts

I think most people would be shocked if they realized just how much time they spend watching TV every day. According to the Nielsen Company then in the US on average people watch 34 hours of TV per week, that is nearly 5 hours per day that people watch. That is just an average though, so not everyone watches that amount, but it is still shocking to see just how much of our time we spend watching CSI and other shows.

When TVs used to be big and bulky then people really only had one or two in the house so watching it used to be a family affair. However now that flat screen tellys have come out so they don’t take up much room, and the prices have come down, then people have a lot more of them in their houses. Now kids can watch whatever they want in their bedrooms, for as long as they want, because they are out of the prying eyes of their parents. There is also a lot of snobbery about the size of your TV now because of all the larger sizes that have come onto the market. While a 42 inch television used to be the pinnacle of entertainment then now if it is less than 50 inches in size then it is considered small.

In the Western world we now have access 24/7 to cheap processed food which is laden with a calories and unfortunately not laden with nutrients, combine that with the amount of TV we watch which has us sat down all night and probably eating that food, and it is easy to see why so many people are obese nowadays. But what kind of interesting things can you do instead of watching your favorite shows?

One of the best things you can do which will be a lot of fun is to try out a new hobby. There are literally thousands of different hobbies that you might want to try out and while not all of them will actually get you up and being physically active, then a lot of them do. Even with the most mundane hobby like stamp collecting then it has to be more rewarding that melting your brain in front of the TV all day. Some people might complain that they don’t have enough time to take up a new hobby though, but based on the figures we discussed earlier then if you cut down how much TV you watch then you could have 30 hours or more a week to dedicate to a new hobby. With that kind of time free each week then the world is your oyster and you could do anything from learning to speak a foreign language to even learning an instrument you have always wanted to.

Or if you don’t fancy any of that then you could go back to college. That’s right, if you fancy a change of career or just want to try and get promoted then you could use all that extra free time you have to take some courses and get better qualifications. If you hate the idea of going back to school and having to actually leave the house to learn then instead you could do a course through one of the distance learning companies. There are two great ideas there to not only give you more interesting things to do, but to increase your knowledge and skills in different areas and maybe even increase your career prospects, so turn off the TV and start living!
